The rape of prudence: worse than the cost of World War? It could be..."the terrifying total of our national debt...", click on the image for a link to the Daily Mail's write-up from February, just in case you missed it; I thought it an appropriate time for a little reminder and what's worse is that even this isn't the whole story!

Even at their most basic level the numbers are too big for people to contemplate. For example, stories that each household owes £40,000 per person are meaningless because we won't actually see that money in the first place. It's our children and grandchildren who will meet this debt and they won't know any different because they will be starting from square one. It's difficult to quantify something that is beyond your normal points of reference - but when compared with WW2 debt - which we've just finished paying off 60+ years after the event - puts it into perspective in time rather than in money.

I don't know if any of that makes sense.

Hi Paul...all totally understandable! Especially the square one bit, very psycho-analytical of you :-)

I think in 2006 or 2007 the UK paid the final instalment, I guess the crisis just puts us all back in hock, what a coincidence...ahem.

I'm still 'up' at Stef's place by the way! Done my visit-stats no end of good :-)
