Oh oh!...

Ireland scrape past GeorgiaThis World Cup just keeps getting better. "This was one of the most dramatic nights in the history of World Cup rugby as Georgia so nearly - and how it would have been deserved - produced the sport's greatest ever upset, losing narrowly 14-10 to Ireland in Bordeaux and having countless chances to win it." [Telegraph link] "
Georgia, the former Soviet Republic, has Europe's highest point, Mount Elbrus, and they climbed the highest mountain yesterday. A win for Georgia - and they should have, could have won - would have sent shock waves not just through rugby but through the sporting world."
The Georgian rugby team have lived up to the originator of their five cross flag, being both brilliant and splendid. The first mention of the five-cross design dates back to the middle of the XIVth century, when an unknown Franciscan monk wrote that the kingdom's flag was 'a white-colored cloth with five red crosses.' In prior centuries, Georgian kings had marched into battle brandishing a simpler flag, similar to the 'St. George's cross' [...], a single red cross, on a white background. According to a vexillological history written by the Georgian scholar Giorgi Gabeskiria, the four extra crosses were likely added during the reign of Giorgi V (also known as "the Brilliant" or "the Splendid"), who drove out the Mongols. Around that time, Georgians founded several monasteries in the Holy Land and became widely known for their piety. The new design was ostensibly fashioned after the Jerusalem cross, a symbol used by crusaders there and adopted as a testament to Georgia's righteous reputation."

How good was that? What a pity that Georgia missed three attempted drop goals in the final quarter. Not bad from a country with only 8 Rugby pitches. Perhaps we shouldn't halt the selling off of school playing fields, fewer pitches might be the answer rather than fewer good performances.

Absolutely incredible and so enjoyable!!!!

Now that Tonga have beaten Samoa (sort of an upset in the 'scheme of things') it means that we have a crunch game (in more ways than one!) against Tonga....I still believe we will beat Samoa - it will be an open game of many tries by our backs...

hopes...

please...

I agree I think we can beat Samoa if we get plenty of the ball in the last third. We need to get some good ball out wide although I think we will miss JR.

You thought that was good what about SA and Tonga!
What a game spoilt only by the result.
One must feel for the underdog - I was against the amount of teams but the gulf has decreased!
Samoa England next! Wish I shared your optimism! But then ...
“Victory is sweetest when you've known defeat.”
Edge of the seat stuff no doubt.
Caves on Mars and life within? Lets hope those in the English shirts play with not only life but some bloody passion!
Johnny will no doubt be targeted – but he should have more options for the teams and the boot to punish?

Well it was a great game!
England went to sleep on occasions BUT there were times of commitment and old fashioned body on the line.
The player most impressing was Gomarsall leading the Green Shoots of recovery.
Jonny made a respectable start after his injury.
Beware though as Tonga are no push over and will take heart from the first hour of the game AND they finished so well against the RSA.

“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead.”

The appetite is truly whetted!

Perhaps though we need our own version of the Ag, the Siva Tau or Haka how about some Morris Dancing?

Onwards and upwards…………………

Hi Kenji! Good comments as always, it was a good game (I watched it in Panama airport!) Very enjoyable but my eyesight must be failing because the fourth official gave that try and I know he wouldn't be mistaken after so many replays, would he?...have the laws of rugby changed or was it an Auatralian/French video ref?

Anyway, as suspected, Tonga becomes teh crunch game (I didn't see it live but have all the games on video via the RWC2007 website.)

I'm glad we played well (enough) although as you say it was a bit too close at some stages although I recall Samoa were winning in the 2003 game for a bit...and also at least we have now left it to the Irish to be the most disappointing team.

The ref made a couple of shockers but wasn't to bad overall but that stiff arm on JW from Brian Lima should have got a card.

Anyway...bye for now as I'm in Rio and the night awaits!

P.S. ...and some keys games coming up:

Wales vs. Fiji (Come on Fiji!)
England vs. Tonga (Come on England!)
Scotland vs. Italy (Come on Italy!)
Argentina vs. Ireland (come on Argentina!)

...now that may lead to to think I'm anti the other home nations but I can assure you it is no such thing, only that Scotland always get an easy group; Argentina always get a hard group (plus after England they're the team I like the most - maybe the 'Spanish' connection - and also I want the old farts to suffer for having their apple cart upset because what I have said above re Arg and Scotland defies coincidence.

Spoken like a great Britain!
Having seen Australia against Fiji what is there to fear.
A good result against Tonga and bring on the Lager poof swilling Aussies!

Sweaties against the Blacks no contest or will home advantage see their first ever win! I'll turn and think again!

In so saying I'm out to watch the Blues against the Reds without the Special one. A new era.

Must go off to see our Poo friends! And the game.

Hope Panama was/is good and be careful with the Seco!

Au Revoir................

Scotland 0 All Blacks 40 ...oh well, it was worth watching just to see Dan Carter..from a purely female perspective.

I'm sorry missy but I'm hoping that Italy beat Scotland on Sunday (or saturday??) Not becasue of any fault or hatred of the Scots rugby team, although I thought they'd be 'above' the fielding of a weak side against NZ, but because I just want the powers that be to get a shock - wouldn't it have been great if Argentina (all but through...please don't let up against Ireland!) Georgia, Italy, Tonga (oh yes!...still a possibility!!) Samoa and Fiji etc progressed instead of the 4 home nations...OK I know that impossible even from a purely mathematical point of view!!!
