Oil production and oil usage is increasing [*] Click to enlarge or better still go HERE for the original or for an even bigger version go HERE. Points to note are that 87% of global energy sources are still fossil fuels and that "renewable sources contribute just 2.7%". Things aren't changing much and remembering the overblown outlook may even seem to be in reverse although based on the compound annual growth rates shown in the graphic [*] "it does seem that we are making progress in tapering the growth of production. Human population and the economy are growing at rates higher than 1.13%, so that means oil is giving up ground to other energy sources."

I would like to point out that the figures are debatable because I thought Venezuela now had the highest proven reserves (and you'd think OPEC would know about their own members) and that worldwide Canada were 3rd. See HERE and HERE; the second (Wiki) link provides the probable reason: "Different sources... ...give different figures, and there are different types of oil, ranging from cheap and easy to recover oils to shale oil or oil sands, which are more expensive and difficult to recover."

OK, a sanction isn't really an octroi but who cares. Zerohedge on the news that on Friday (if a leaked FT report is correct, and it seems to be) that the EU Europe's has upped the ante and may be crossing the Rubicon in its sanctions strategy by targeting the main Russian energy exporters. A glance at the image (left, click to enlarge) will make the craziness of this move glaringly obvious. "If today's news is confirmed, Europe's dramatic shift in sanctions strategy means that Europe's embargo of both the US Dollar and the Euro will accelerate as Russia further intensifies its shift away from both the west and the petrodollar. The only and clear winner here: China..."




Interestingly the UK isn't as secure as it looks from the image above although I will give a hypothetical prize to anyone who can guess correctly the country 2nd on the list of where we import most of our coal from...[answer in red]

Excellent news for the South West and the UK with some sort of energy self sufficiency being brought back (despite foreign firms in control!); soon to be followed by more good [nuclear] news. Despite being "dangerous, unpopular, expensive and risky...replaceable with relative ease and could be forgone with no huge structural shifts in the way the world works" [The Economist: 24/05/11, the 14% solution] it is still a very viable option that Green activists should encourage. Already the future cost being too high etc is being spouted. The image left (click to enlarge) shows what the area in terms of power generated is but the cost of nuclear energy will be now so high, increased "to a level comparable with onshore wind, losing most if not all of the comparative cost advantage, and making it vastly more expensive than coal-fired generation." EUReferendum goes on to say how this due to 'deliberate ploys to increase the price of nuclear plants' and 'fuel poverty will kill vastly more than nuclear accidents are ever likely to'. "...regulation is reckoned to be enough to have caused the massive hike. And much of the regulation has been promoted by Green activists, the aim being to price nuclear power out of business."

Now, Global Wind Day is a worldwide event on 15th June and pushed by European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and "is a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to change our world"; of course they're on about generating renewable energy (oops) rather than any appreciation of the real marvellous and terrifying power of Mother Nature. Brazilian Lars Grael (former sailor now politician) said...

"The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects the wind to change, the realist adjusts the sails to the wind you have."

Oh, hang on...Illegal, deceptive, pathetic, erroneous and lamentable...just some of the adjectives used to describe Cristina the clown's nationalisation of YPF, (playing to the crowd) bascially taking 51% of the total shares from the 57% -58% previously owned by Repsol** (according to La Razon' video: 'La Comunidad Internacional da la espalda a Kirchner'). They also reported that Repsol's president accused the Government of Argentina of having carried out a campaign of harassment, coercion and planned leaks to cause the collapse of the share price of YPF to facilitate their expropriation at bargain prices. Spain's Foreign Minister said "Argentina se ha dado un tiro en el pie" [Español] "Argentina has shot itself in the foot" [English]. Of course we know the real reason...

"President Fernandez has staged a coup de theatre which covered up, as far as possible, her failure at the Summit of the Organization of American States, held last week in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Cristina failed in all her objectives: she did not even get support over the Falklands..."

Earlier this month Matt Ridley posted a withering article about "The beginning of the end of wind"; he writes - not for the first time - about the various negative points of wind energy and the turbine mania that has seized many governments. He highlights the fact that to "the nearest whole number, the percentage of the world’s energy that comes from wind turbines today is: zero"; in fact the energy from wind, solar and bio-fuels combined comes in at 1% (click on image to enlarge). In The Spectator, with the same article, he leads with the headline that the "government has finally seen through the wind-farm scam – but why did it take them so long?".



Anyway, thinking about that while I read more bad news: yesterday the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sent out a press release: "Act now or face costly consequences". In their report they state that urban air pollution - 'premature deaths from ground-level ozone' - will be the top environmental cause of mortality worldwide by 2050 (more even than dirty water and lack of sanitation). perhaps we have the solution: Matt Ridley says that It would be a shame for the 3,500 or so wind turbines in Britain (with hundreds more under construction) to be dismantled of the and suggests the biggest one should remain  "for future generations to marvel at" as a  "monument to the folly of mankind." I have a better idea, thinking ahead to worsening air pollution, leave all the wind farms up but switch them to blow!
