Oblast...oh, blast!

The referendum on September 23-27 in the Donbass and southern Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine on their accession to Russian Federation is, prima facie, an exercise of the right of self-determination by the native population who reject the Western-backed regime change in Kiev in 2014 and the ascendancy of extreme nationalist forces with neo-Nazi leanings in the power structure.

Before you condemn, remember the Kosovo precedent. This is the same, 100%. No ifs, no buts. But it's "them": the baddies, right?...and IF the votes go the Russian way (they will) any action is then not helping the poor saintly (ahem) Ukrainians but an attack on sovereign Russia:

I concur. That, the course of the war, the Ukrainian "gains", and the map above, are EXACTLY what I told my military serving number-two son - to the letter - back in end-Feb/beginning-March this year. Exactly, precisely, TO-THE-LETTER. If fat Span Ows, England-loving, loud, overweight, brash, stubborn, impatient, non-Putin-loving but also non ~~Mr Bean~~ Zelensky-loving average 'man-in-the-street' (general gob-shite "know-all") "knew" this back a few days into the Russian invasion, what of our political class?

Hard to compute? Just think of the ~~bidets~~ (wonderful spell check) Bidens and Clintons (and by extension the Obamas) as crime families: they are; Ukraine is a massive money-laundering opportunity (it is); suddenly it all makes sense.

Opus on opaque Ostpolitik...

The 'appetiser': "you probably failed to notice this, but Russia paid its due debt installment in full last Friday. You probably didn’t see that, because the MSM blanked it." [sic]

The conclusion: "...there is one depressing certainty in 21st century life: our economic system, US democracy, EU fiscal stability, media investigation, bureaucratic rules, banking credibility, corporate governance, NATO information, health science, civil policing, military intelligence and financial sectors are all irreparably compromised by greed, mendacity and unachievable globalist megalomania."

I am presuming too that you have all noticed that China, India (and very early on Pakistan, "so much excitement") and now the Emirates are all overtly not-quite-cosying-up to Russia but certainly not turning them away and making gains while the EU and the UK are failing and going backwards at every level, even propaganda.

Obambulating over oriental Operation Overlord...

Hat-tip to the bad cat for this surf session that ended in an amazing history lesson (further hat-tip to Madeira in the comments).

Delta Airlines (not Omicron Airways [update: but we already have BA.2 right?]) asked a question on Twitter "Name a city that changed your life" and got many 'expected' answers: London, Paris, New York, Moscow, Barcelona, Istanbul and a few less obvious ones...but after a while - as you can guess by the image - the majority of answers became Wuhan, which to be fair has changed [almost] everyone's life so is clearly the winning answer.

One reply even posted this video, presumably from Wuhan Tourist Board : "Wuhan, a city by the side of Yangtze river with high risen buildings, and connected by many majestic bridges. Countless fun and adventures are hidden in this energetic city awaits for you to discover." ...not a joke, posted in Nov 2021. The video is indeed almost entirely images and film of roads, intersections, traffic and bridges! I really don't think they can expect a rush of tourism, do you?

The unexpected history lesson was - and how many people have any idea at all? - that Wuhan was strategically firebombed (a la Dresden) in December 1944; from Peter Harmsen's blog 'China in WW2'...The US Firebombing of Wuhan [Part 1] [Part 2]. Wang Shih-chieh, a Chinese politician and scholar, wrote

"regardless of cost to the city and its civilian population. Wuhan had to be sacrificed."

The raid used M-69 incendiary bombs, an 'extremely deadly cocktail of phosphorous and napalm just developed for the purpose by scientists at Harvard University'; after this "first experience with firebombing as a tactical weapon to be a successful experiment" it was later used extensively against the Japanese mainland cities. [update comment: those quotes are from Peter's blog, not that M69 Wiki page!]

Wuhan was a Japanese hub in WWII, and a launch pad for Operation Ichi-Go, which is important not so much for the eventual outcome of the war but for the turn of events that allowed the Chinese communists to gain against the National Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China; some have said that 'the impact Ichi-Go had on the political situation in China was as important to the post-war world order as Operation Overlord'.

Update 20:37: not - but almost - forgetting that today is one year on: "January 23rd, is the day, in 2020, when the world changed as China first implemented in Wuhan the novel public health policy that has come to define the COVID-19 pandemic."

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we will remember them.

October obambulation...

Weekend wandering. England, England, England. October 25th was - as you all know (ahem) - the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt. The [in]famous two-fingered salute (V sign) is 'said' to have come from English longbowmen but according to Wiki "no written historical primary sources support this contention"...except (Wiki goes on...) "Medieval illustrations and tapestries, however, depict English archers giving the sign, as do tapestries hanging in Angers Castle, home of the Angevin (Plantagenet) dynasty." Hmmm, seems like there may be some 'primary sources'. That said, maybe it was just the V of Henry the Fifth (Henry V), what would have been had it not been for his 'unexpected' (convenient?) death...

Anyhoo...on to October 26th and the Rugby World Cup semi-final between England and New Zealand's outstanding All Blacks. The V sign makes its return (image)! Best England performance EVER...and that's in 50 years of watching although early on in the 1960s I could hardly understand what was going on. Love this: “New Zealand lose occasionally but they are never crushed. So this was a glorious first. Forget the scoreboard. They scored one lucky try and for the rest of the evening, they looked like little boys being bullied outside the sweet shop. They were lucky not to lose players to the bin and there was a time when Marius Jonker, the TMO, was a far bigger danger to England than the opposition." Stephen Jones for The Times quoted in Rugbypass. [my emphasis]

And so onto today, 27th October: the 100th year anniversary of the first performance of Edward Elgar's last major work, the tear-jerking Cello Concerto in E minor. "Most concertos take a little time to come to their main point. if they don’t make you wait until the slow movement – and many do – for their crux, they at least keep the listener waiting through a short orchestral introduction. Elgar was having none of it." [sic] A bit like England XV yesterday. [edit] And another V image - obviously the player makes the difference!

Unfortunately we won't have an all BREXIT rugby World Cup final but if it were so who better than Elgar to provide some Pomp and Circumstance.

Obligations over open ossuary...

Image from The Royal British Legion, 'a national champion of Remembrance'. Our obligation is to remember. The Legion came into existence after 'The Great War', when many that had fought joined together to support to each other. "The Legion advocates a specific type of Remembrance connected to the British Armed Forces, those who were killed, those who fought with them and alongside them."

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the end of that 'war to end all wars'. "The absolute horror of the First World War, if not realised when reading details, is brought home when we look at the numbers of dead and wounded", Open ossuaries

Update: stunned by something I've just read at SteynOnline: "Exactly a century ago - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - the guns fell silent on Europe's battlefields. The belligerents had agreed the terms of the peace at 5am that November morning, and the news was relayed to the commanders in the field shortly thereafter that hostilities would cease at eleven o'clock. And then they all went back to firing at each other for a final six hours. On that last day, British imperial forces lost some 2,400 men, the French 1,170, the Germans 4,120, the Americans about 3,000."

Offence offensive II...

...or 'defence offence offensive' given that The Battle of Britain was a great defensive effort. How to ruin a good day and a memorial day at that: I hate to whinge (ahem...OK, I love it) but Niall McCarthy, Data Journalist at Statista has really pissed me off: first the email: "Bloody Foreigners
2,424 British pilots flew against the Luftwaffe during that summer in 1940 and 452 were killed. Many foreign pilots also fought in the battle... ...Britain owes its immigrants a debt of gratitude and amid an air of anger and uncertainty post-Brexit, their decisive intervention at the nation's darkest hour in 1940 seems to be long forgotten by some." FFS, making things worse the article and graph have the title "How Britain owes its immigrants a debt of gratitude" (and btw his graph is wrong anyway missing out at least three nationalities that took part).

Niall clearly hasn't noticed the myriad museums and memorials, especially the Polish War Memorial - that I used to pass every week - nor the commemorative services and wreath laying every year. Has he heard the phrase "The Few", or "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few"? He probably doesn't know that many of the pilots were encouraged to stay as their homes no longer existed. Worse, he insinuates they are forgotten by xenophobes and ties it all to 'anger and uncertainty post-Brexit'; he can fuck right off.

Global Populism Rises To Highest Level Since World War II [Zero Hedge]...of course liberals are blaming the Russians or anything rather than themselves. Looking at the article the other image - "Populism Index" - should give us all cause for concern: not since the late 1930s to 1941 has it been so high.

Of course one could blame the 'populists'* but that would be wrong: certainly in Europe we should blame the EU and all the anti-liberal anti-democratic anti common sense scumbag politicians who have brought us to this crux. Don't blame the effect, blame the cause. It could still be stopped, literally within weeks if the right decisions were to be taken. The fact that the necessary steps are so obvious yet no politician from any leading nation is taking those steps means only one thing: they want a race war and they want a holy war.

Odious ogre officially outed II...

Yes, the II in the blog post title because the first (Odious ogre officially outed; only oblocutor O'Donnell obnubilates...) was back in 2011. Arch vampire and actor supreme* Blair, the destroyer of the UK with his decade or more of damage - continued by the Brownstuff - that was New Labour, is castigated but unpunished. Decried but not even a slapped wrist in the offing. A non apology and with the gall to say - with the evidence of the gross failure now spread worldwide [11th anniversary today] - he would do it all again.

Funnily enough back then it was hardly reported, I wrote: "A reader contributes...

If you can't understand the title it means that at last Blair is being outed over the Iraq War lies and the intentional misleading of parliament. The smoking gun is in view, the evidence is now before the Chilcott Inquiry: big news but not particularly interesting to the MSM apparently because hardly anyone seems to be giving 'sufficient' coverage or column inches that the former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith's evidence deserves. I guess these days any day is "a good day to bury bad news".

One who did report it [Stephen Glover that day's Daily Mail] ""At last, the damning evidence that should bury Blair for his lies over Iraq".

Unfortunately, Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell has banned the Inquiry from releasing records of secret talks between Tony Blair and President George W. Bush...

Apart from the seeming lack of interest in giving Blair his comeuppance I also note that nobody seems to be mentioning Gordon Brown either; cunts. It is as though he has been airbrushed from history and all the problems the UK faces are now the evil Coalition's fault."

Yes, as usual BBC were being very coy because back then they were still in crush-Coalition mode; the lack of coverage was overshadowed by what became a non-story; two days after the Blair news I wrote about the Guardian and BBC 'overreaction' to the Coulson hacking 'scandal' and how "Incredibly, on their UK News page there are 5 MORE articles (only the main story is as per the Home News page)...and note how the Blair news (and everything else!) is demoted... ...and somewhat appropriate following Peter Sisson's comments:
"In the later stages of my career, I lost count of the number of times I asked a producer for a brief on a story, only to be handed a copy of The Guardian and told 'it's all in there'".

Of course very different today...ahem.
