Orinoco oil output III...

By way of celebration of the easing of sanctions on Venezuela last week (albeit temporarily for the present) here's an interesting blog from Latinometrics Substack today: Venezuela's Oil Potential and its History [LINK]. Some facts from the article: "Venezuela owns 18% of all of the world's oil"..."By 1950, Venezuela was the world’s 4th-wealthiest nation per capita." Unbelievable, right?

...and the image below shows how they are keeping most of their oil in the ground, not what they'd like to do!

And here's where I repeat a post from 5 years ago:

Hazard a guess at these two countries:

The first country "is one of the region’s oldest and strongest democracies.
"It boasts a stronger social safety net than any of its neighbours and is making progress on its promise to deliver free health care and higher education to all its citizens. It is a model of social mobility and a magnet for immigrants from across Latin America and Europe.
"The press is free, and the political system is open; opposing parties compete fiercely in elections and regularly alternate power peacefully. It sidestepped the wave of military juntas that mired some Latin American countries in dictatorship. Thanks to a long political alliance and deep trade and investment ties with the United States, it serves as the Latin American headquarters for a slew of multinational corporations. It has the best infrastructure in South America. It is still unmistakably a developing country, with its share of corruption, injustice, and dysfunction, but it is well ahead of other poor countries by almost any measure...

"The second country is one of Latin America’s most impoverished nations and its newest dictatorship. Its schools lie half deserted. The health system has been devastated by decades of underinvestment, corruption, and neglect; long-vanquished diseases, such as malaria and measles, have returned. Only a tiny elite can afford enough to eat. An epidemic of violence has made it one of the most murderous countries in the world. [sic]
"It is the source of Latin America’s largest refugee migration in a generation, with millions of citizens fleeing in the last few years alone. Hardly anyone (aside from other autocratic governments) recognizes its sham elections, and the small portion of the media not under direct state control still follows the official line for fear of reprisals. By the end of 2018, its economy will have shrunk by about half in the last five years. It is a major cocaine-trafficking hub, and key power brokers in its political elite have been indicted in the United States on drug charges. Prices double every 25 days. The main airport is largely deserted, used by just a handful of holdout airlines bringing few passengers to and from the outside world."

The two countries? Answer: these two countries are in fact the same country: Venezuela. Forty years is a long time
(Highlight with cursor to see answer).

Ova over oil...

Un oeuf is enough as the old classic goes, but in Venezuela the cost of one egg is the same as 126 litres of petrol (3.33 lorry loads) ... no, you didn't misread that. Ludicrous. "La crisis venezolana es una férrea traducción del incoherente manejo que el régimen chavista y madurista le ha dado a la economía del país durante los últimos 20 años, que hoy se encuentra desquiciada y desequilibrada" [LINK]...more or less: 'The Venezuelan crisis is a fierce representation of the incoherent management that the Chavista and [now] Madurista regime has given to the country's economy during the last 20 years, which today is deranged and unbalanced.' Deranged, I'll say; believe it or not...according to Calisa in Venezuela al Diá, Venezuelan Economist José Toro Hardy has reported* that "A petrol truck takes 38,000 litres; 1L of 91 octane petrol costs 1 Bolivar per litre [yes, one Bolivar]; therefore the cost of the truck-load is Bs38,000. Meanwhile a tray of 30 eggs costs Bs3,800,000 (they tell me that it is already more expensive). That leads to the unusual conclusion that the equivalent of the cost of the tray of eggs you could pay for 100 trucks of gasoline." Making an egg the cost of more than three truck-loads of petrol. Unusual? he also calls it 'Awful'; in fact it's fucking obscene and ridiculous.

I was so wrong in early 2006; but also so right later that year: lot has flowed under the bridge since Orinoco oil overflowing..."The Orinoco river oil strip will become the world's greatest reservoir of petroleum for the next years". This may explain why Chavez seemed so cocky and triumphant as he strutted his stuff on his world tour in the last few weeks. In my opinion it only makes him more of a danger."

Oro ounce obstrobogulous outpacing of oil...

The price of gold is now at an "all time high at around 44 times the price of oil". The previous high was 41 times (back in 1892!). Is This The Biggest Crisis In History?

Ows oblectation...

...over the years. Owsblog began over ten years ago; I was unable to post on the actual 'birthday' (21st Sept) anniversary but decided to put the most viewed blog-post from each year as a present to myself. [edit] Interestingly the variety isn't as wide as you might expect; a few of the high rankings are just (I presume) people using Google for images and being led here; I'd say only five or so themes cover all ten posts whereas what I have posted most about doesn't figure at all (lucky I don't do it for money!) :-)

[Note: some of the links in the older posts are inactive]

2015 (YTD): obstreperous ogling oblectation: the Sun's Page 3 and will it /won't it continue.

2014: outbreak of oil odium: oil price control 'gloves are off' amongst producer and price setting countries; also the worry that so many countries 'need' the price of oil over USD100 a barrel.

2013: Owsblog's 3rd most viewed post ever and my favourite (except for the orgasm posts ([see 2005] ) Obama's offspring II..."I thought these were just typical of a plethora of Obama's seemingly cretinous statements but I hope it isn't more sinister and part of a general symptom of virulent black racism being the new normal"...

2012: October: a bit tame and presumably just a number of people Googling the images although each is linked.

2011: Odd Obama osculation: again not much text, only Obama kissing Chavez, yes...but it was just a Benetton campaign.

2010: Oracle octopus opts regarding the predicted results for the World Cup finals that year when cephalopod celebrity Paul opted for various winners throughout the tournament, including eventual winners, Spain (overall, English born [Weymouth] Paul predicted 11 out of 13 correctly.)

2009: the most viewed ever, Overt obscurantism re demonising of our porcine friends by naming a human problem 'swine' flu: "If you show symptoms PLEASE do not go anywhere near a pig farm, the last thing that industry needs is a pig actually getting the virus!"

2008Orgasmic olisbos, the history of vibrators and the original meaning of 'hysteria', plus lucky doctors! "Arising from the touch of the genital organs required by the treatment, there follows twitchings accompanied at the same time by pain and pleasure...from that time she is free of all the evil she felt"

2007: Ows's optical opiate: OK, OK...I'm not assuming people popped in to read the prose: 'Sexiest Women in the World according to readers of FHM Magazine in the UK'.

2006: One's opprobrium offers opportunity…, Kate Moss on her 'comeback': "Is she now the top paid model? In only one year she has gone from being Cocaine Kate, with many kicking her hard while she was down, to Kate the Great"

2005: I knew it! Well up on the most read/viewed was the Ows 'Orgasm' series: the middle of that series being the 2nd most read/viewed ever: Orgasms... the second coming. "While all orgasms are organically the same, varying only in strength and length, a woman may not experience them all in the same way..."

Omnipotent oil...

Courtesy of: Visual Capitalist

Oil production and oil usage is increasing [*] Click to enlarge or better still go HERE for the original or for an even bigger version go HERE. Points to note are that 87% of global energy sources are still fossil fuels and that "renewable sources contribute just 2.7%". Things aren't changing much and remembering the overblown outlook may even seem to be in reverse although based on the compound annual growth rates shown in the graphic [*] "it does seem that we are making progress in tapering the growth of production. Human population and the economy are growing at rates higher than 1.13%, so that means oil is giving up ground to other energy sources."

I would like to point out that the figures are debatable because I thought Venezuela now had the highest proven reserves (and you'd think OPEC would know about their own members) and that worldwide Canada were 3rd. See HERE and HERE; the second (Wiki) link provides the probable reason: "Different sources... ...give different figures, and there are different types of oil, ranging from cheap and easy to recover oils to shale oil or oil sands, which are more expensive and difficult to recover."

Outbreak of oil odium...

Very interesting self explanatory graph on the left (click to enlarge). Oil price control 'gloves are off' and the price has 'collapsed' losing 20% since the summer as Saudi strategy changes and a fight for market share ensues..."That means there is not an immediate floor on oil prices"...as if we needed anything else to worry about!

The OPEC 'split'  belies the fact that this is relatively minor on a historical scale and dropping to 60 or 70 would be the real worry but the fact that so many countries 'need' the price over USD100 a barrel is a worry in itself.

Ophic oil...

First an excerpt from Oslo observations: "Remember the science is settled? Remember there is consensus? Remember drowning pets and exploding children? Remember being told not to eat meat or the Inconvenient Truth and Al Gore's Nobel prize?"

Anyway, I digress, in this pdf are all the numbers in the video (left); the global CAGW snake-oil salesman are getting found out...the 50:1 Project. "What if I could show you that it’s 50 times more expensive to try and STOP climate change than it is to ADAPT to climate change? Well I can, in less than 10 minutes, right here in this video". On that site there are full length interviews with all those who speak in the video.

Worth noting too on What's Up With That? the complete debunking of the 'consensus'.

Orinoco octane...

See chart (click to enlarge) from the US EIA: it illustrates petrol (Finished Motor Gasoline) exports from the USA to Venezuela ('000 Barrels/Day). This incredible fact tends to support last year's opinion that Venezuela's world leading oil reserves are irrelevant. Thank's to Setty's comment for the graph. Hat-tip: Caracas Chronicles "Somehow, Bolivarian anti-imperialism requires transferring $10 million a day more or less directly from Venezuela’s poor to U.S. gasoline refiners."

P.S. And for readers of Owsblog Nick Ripe will henceforth be called the well deserved name of New Krusty.
