Opposing organ outrage...

NO to FGM!
Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (a UN-sponsored awareness day). More than 3 million girls are at risk of FGM each year on the African continent alone and whatever the result of the turmoil in Egypt at present I hope they can sort out what in 2009 affected about 96% of some female age groups there (scroll down to see graph) or - figures from December 2010 - about 75% overall. I cannot think of a single good reason for FGM. (I am not making a purely 'religious' point either: it is clear that there are varying positions: some society/religious leaders promote it but others consider it irrelevant and many contribute to its elimination (image link to WHO factsheet).
