Olympian Oscar...

So much bad news; so many famous names falling from on high: the latest is Oscar Pistorius, reaching the height of his fame at the London Olympics last year, surely the pinnacle of an amazing life. Now however, he has fallen, heavily, and judging by the evidence he doesn't have much going for him: and as I said to my son when he told me the news as it broke on St. Valentine's Day, it seems Oscar doesn't have a leg to stand on...oops.

Owsblog will continue to be quiet for a week as Ows himself undergoes bodily reparations; nothing like Krusty though (Madame Tussaud was spotted on a flight to Cuba...coincidence?).

Though this story is very sad, there is little these days that surprises or shocks me and it may seem like apathy but I often just shrug my shoulders.

As I write this I cynically found myself thinking of that song made famous by Peggy Lee "Is That All There Is?"

Take a listen, it's on line over at You Tube...

This has developed into a discussion in the UK about how the media is treating it.

Many are angry at the images of the victim that have been plastered over certain newspapers of her as a model.

The question being is it distasteful, the error was probably that they used an image of her in a bikini. They could have found one still glamorous but dressed.

I said many are angry...the radio phone-ins give that impression but people are always more vocal on such programmes and they look for callers that will wind the audience up but are people really bothered?

This particular programme has an expert presenter who knows how to play the audience and often they don't even realise.

haha, Gildy you are so right about those programmes and call-ins.

Peggy Lee, yes what a voice but the point you make is so right, the news is sensationalist and we all are numbed now to anything: blood, deaths, whatever. 20, 000 killed in earthquake, another sugar with your tea?

...and of course I should have added the perfect example: thousands dying in hospital from easily preventable causes and the horse-meat thing. Or the Huhne speeding saga, there have been a dozen times more column inches and news coverage of one MP's wrong-doing than from the whole NHS saga.

You are so right with the examples that you highlight as an obession in the media and sadly how some are ignored.

The media often says that it talks about what the viewers and listeners are but they often dictate what the public is or leads public opinion.

I have no strong views about the gay marriage debate that is going through Parliament nor the reform of the House of Lords but it is a way to divert public and media from what affects the majority and that is the economy. The NHS.

Its all diversion tactics..
